We are very proud to work with this wonderful naturally processed coffee from the Elida Estate. The Lamastus family, growers for the past century, are an experienced and proud coffee family that are continually investing in and seeking new ways of improving their already stellar coffees. This lot placed 1st in 2013 for non-Geisha natural competition.
The estate is one of the highest altitude coffee plantations within Panama and coffee is shade grown in rich volcanic soils. More than half the estate is surrounded by private forest reserve and Baru Volcano National Park, a sanctuary to many native species of plants, and over 200 species of birds and mammals. The estate commits to practices that protect this sanctuary, and employs no herbicides or insecticides. In efforts to retain and provide for farm workers, Elida provides housing and cooking wood to the indigenous Ngäbe-Buglé families who work the farm, as well as education for their children in an on-site classroom.
Owing to the estate’s high altitude lower average temperature through growing season, these coffee cherries can take up to a month longer than usual to fully ripen. This slower growing period pairs with the region’s volcanic soil to produce dense beans that result in a uniquely sweet and clean cup, helping to establish a very mature and elegant profile in this naturally processed coffee.
